I think I am posting this in the wrong area... but something that I have noticed is that this is a transparency issue. Ergo, trying to make the background transparent results in this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libgtk2-trayicon-perl/+bug/156886 Which follows the exact symptoms of this bug; total white background instead of transparent, no color change etc.
