Thanks for the suggestions, options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 has not helped me with the Intel D945GCLF motherboard. Same problems continue to occur, even with the update to the 2.6.32-22-generic #33 kernel. I am still not sure if it is a kernel or alsa problem. The gdm often starts but it is really slow due to the overwhelming "spurious response" error messages being sent to the logs.
