Hi there -

Yes, thank you, with your advice, I did manage to fix the problem. I
wasn't able to edit the file (gedit didn't seem to like the idea of
binary data ;^), but in the end I deleted the files, re-installed the
Ubuntu One client and got it going.

OK, so trying to piece it together with hindsight, here's what I think
happened:

- I thought I had successfully signed up for my U1 account on the
server... (but as became clear as we went through your diagnostic
suggestions, the server-side didn't think so...); so possibly when I
first tried to run the client, it may have tried to create those
client-side files and had nothing to put in them...

- by ill luck, at the same time that we were trying to figure this out,
it happened that the U1 server was having some issues (notes/contacts
server down, etc)... so at least once, the reason I couldn't connect was
a server problem, nothing to do with the client settings. I don't mean
that as a criticism of the U1 folks, it just happened to confuse the
diagnostic picture.

Anyway, once those glitches were out of the way, it worked OK.

I have since successfully synced files by the following mechanisms:

1 - create file on Ubuntu netbook, let U1 sync it to the cloud;

2 - upload file from non-Ubuntu laptop to the cloud, let U1 sync it down
to the Ubuntu netbook.

It's a good tool.

I had hoped to test the Lucid release functions, which look even better.
Unfortunately I ran into all kinds of problems trying to upgrade to
Lucid on my aging Tadpole Talin laptop, so that project is on hold for
hte time being.

Thanks again for your help - I'll go and update the status now.

Yrs.,
Robin
