When instead of logging out I try to reset gdm using control-alt-back
space I get to a console but gdm doesn't reload.

and now /var/log/Xorg.0.log contains three extra lines:

Synaptics DeviceOff called
(II) fglrx(0): [drm] removed 1 reserved context for kernel
(II) fglrx(0): [drm] unmapping 8192 bytes of SAREA 0x1f7000 at 0xb7c8d000

To allow me to log in I then have to:

sudo killall gdm
sudo gdm
