It is still possible to call the import that way, and besides it should work. 
(the files wxPython/wx.py exit for python 2.5 and 2.4, whatever version of 
wxgtk you are using). This happens because wxgtk2{4,6} remove each other from 
the python path, or at least seem to do so.
Could you please try to run a 'apt-get update' and 'apt-get upgrade' to make 
sure you're up-to-date, try to remove python-wxgtk2.4 and then reinstall it and 
try to reproduce that bug, to see if it's ok or if it still happens ? thanks
