Public bug reported: Binary package hint: indicator-applet
The indicator applet lacks configuration options and this goes against the highly customizable ubuntu environment. As it is now, it understates my expectations of a nice ubuntu application. Some of the issues are: - It's impossible to configure the default mail and IM applications. As an example, Pidgin appears as any other application added to the applet, and not as a IM application, like Empathy. This should be the same with other IM clients too. Thunderbird has a very early plugin to the indicator applet that behave somewhat the same way, but worse. - It's not easy to remove undesired default applications, such as empathy and evolution, from the applet. To do the trick we have to remove files from the /usr/share/indicators/messages/applications folder. This is not good for normal users (non-power users). - There should be a way to customize the "alert" icon, change the color, set if it blinks or play a sound when a new message arrive. It will be nice if the color, blinking and sounds change depending on the application which is claiming for attention. Some IM applications should have the ability to customize the alert type based on its status (i.e. busy status should not alert as aggressive as online status) - The applet seems to come together with the sound and battery applets. Apparently (correct me if I am wrong) there's no way to separate them. If I don't like the envelope thing I have to take off the battery and sound too. If I don't like the sound in the upper panel, I have to take the other two with it to the bottom panel. It's all or nothing.
