Your thought may be correct in my opinion, because in my case I can see that Compiz effects loading takes a *very* long time after I login. The desktop background appears, and gnome-do gets launched immediately, but the menu at the top of the screen isn't present until the effects start to run, after about 15 seconds. That said, 15s it's not such a long wait, but I can clearly remember that Compiz loading was faster in Karmic.
