Stopping ProFTPD ftp daemon: proftpd
You forgot the * prefix that Ubuntu uses for its services messaging, i.e:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 stop
* Stopping apache 2.0 web server...
Just a matter of style and unity :), but an easy fix.
