Wow. This looks like something I haven't encountered at all. I peeped at
the code, and can't see why this error would arise. I wonder if you have
a space in your password... I'd think that should be handled, but
perhaps you could temporarily change your password to a long
alphanumeric one with no special characters at all -- A to Z, a to z and
0-9 only -- and see if you still get the same debug log when gwibber-
service tries to connect?

And, of course, just to check - please search for these package names in 
Synaptic Package Manager and put down the "Installed Version" number for each 
of them?
gwibber
gwibber-service
python-pycurl

(The versions I have are 2.30.0.1-0ubuntu1, 2.30.0.1-0ubuntu1 and
7.19.0-3 respectively.)
