Hi; sorry for the slow response. I have now upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04, with 0.12.8 - but I'm afraid I have the same problem when playing CDs.
I've tried two other things: Importing a CD using Rhythmbox and then playing the files in the software: this plays back smoothly, without interruption to the sound. Playing the CD using Movie Player (2.3.0): this has the same problems as Rhythmbox (that is, sound is interrupted even though the CD continues to 'play' in the CD drive). Any suggestions or anything else I can try?
