I have the same issue with my HP tm 2000 with nivida 6150

This is what I found:
You will get this behavior if you upgrade the nvidia driver either from ubuntu 
"restricted drivers" or by downloading the latest driver from nvidia.
I reinstalled my laptop and kept the driver that came with the installation and 
the issue disappeared. I am able to reboot and get to gnome while on battary. 
So it has to do with upgrading the video driver and something with power safe 
.. "just a guess".

Also, while upgrading the driver with the latest from nvidia I get:

THE DISTRIBUTION-PROVIDED PRE-INSTALL SCRIPT FAILED.
UNABLE TO LOAD nvidia.ko the kernel module
