I read on the Ubuntu forums that if you repeat the installation through jockey it might work. I tried reinstalling the driver and then restarting the computer, and this time it worked fine. The only problem appears to be with a low resolution ubuntu theme in plymouth at startup and shutdown, but I think this is well documented elsewhere.
