That's the default install with only the network manager applet removed (NM removed via APT). I never touched the icons in any other way, never tried to organize them, and the applet is already set to the extreme right - and is put back to the right at each new session login, then grows again. Some activity is needed to see this happing on a default install. Try opening / closing Rhythmbox multiple times (50 or so), or frequently copying files. The gap should become obvious between the separator and the rest of the applet. Another possibility is that this bug is linked to the Pidgin icon only, could not tell when I opened this report, as there was quite a lot of activity going on in the applet at the time.
