I was having the same problem with this error message. Here's what I was able to do to solve it:
I went to System, then Administration, then Disk Utility, then clicked on the drive, then clicked on the blue link that says: /media/disk Pulls it right up and I was able to access all my files on that drive. You can drag and drop them to your Places easily or copy them onto CD's.
