Public bug reported: After upgrade from Kubuntu 9.10 to 10.04, I cannot start KDE anymore. The KDM login works fine and the KDE splash appears. Then the KDE Desktop and start menu should appear, but they don't. But the mouse cursor looks fine and I can use Alt-F2 to start any program. Also the KDE startup music works fine.
I have the same problem on two different notebooks. One notebook has an Nvidia graphic with nvidia driver. On this computer, the screen fades to black while the KDE splash screen displays the last two icons. The other notebook has an old ATI graphic chip without 3D acceleration. On this compiter, the KDE splash fades out, leaving me with the blue background image, no desktop and no KDE menu. After playing around a lot on both computers without success, I decided to wipe the Linux partitions and install Kubuntu from the CD which worked fine. The following attempts did not fix the problem but might contain useful hints to find the problem cause: - Changing the graphic driver or graphic mode and text resolution of Kernel, Grub and KDE - Trying with a new user that has a fresh empty home directory - Copy /etc/kdrmrc /etc/kde4 and /usr/share/kde4 from another computer that works fine - Disabling boot splash - Start KDE without KDM. - In addition I noticed that the computer does not detect USB memory sticks properly while KDE is hanging. Dmesg shows that the device has been detected but it does not assign a device (usually /dev/sdb) to it. When I stop KDM, I can access memory sticks. - The fact that my second computer with pretty old ATI chip is also affected lets me highly assume, that the problem ist not realted to the graphic driver or any of its settings. -The fact that the problem occurs also without using KDM might be interesting because most other similar bug reports that I found highlight that KDM could be the problem cause. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- After upgrade 9.10->10.04 KDE desktop does not appear after KDE splash fades out https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/572914 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
