with 2.6.34-rc4, the symptoms are exactly the same: on boot, the
association appears to succeed, and on the router I can see that an IP
address is being allocated to 00:0c:f6:37:be:29, which is the macaddress
of wlan0. But this IP address, although distributed by the server, is
never allocated on the client.

I can see in daemon.log:

Apr 30 12:41:51 pixie wpa_supplicant[607]: Trying to associate with
00:1d:7e:c6:9c:24 (SSID='WRT-AS24' freq=2412 MHz)
Apr 30 12:41:51 pixie wpa_supplicant[607]: Association request to the driver
failed

And syslog shows messages like:

returned, data->length = 677
