Yes, -nvidia requires several settings be specified in xorg.conf in addition to being installed. Alternatives also need to be set up properly so it can use its own GL libraries instead of the standard X.org libraries.
This is why we provide Jockey in Ubuntu, as it gives a user-friendly way to take care of all these things. When you install -nvidia by hand, if you don't do everything just right you can end up with a broken system. It would be nice if -nvidia some day could work without needing xorg.conf settings. Perhaps they could be patched into xorg-server. But no one has plans to do this work right now. We can keep the bug report open as a wishlist however. ** Summary changed: - cannot boot if no xorg.conf + -nvidia cannot boot if no xorg.conf ** Changed in: nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Wishlist ** Changed in: nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu) Status: New => Triaged ** Summary changed: - -nvidia cannot boot if no xorg.conf + -nvidia requires settings in xorg.conf else it will crash ** Summary changed: - -nvidia requires settings in xorg.conf else it will crash + -nvidia requires settings in xorg.conf else it won't work -- -nvidia requires settings in xorg.conf else it won't work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/494625 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
