Can you install paman from apt-get ? This will help debugging sound issues with pulse.
Open terminal and type >sudo apt-get install paman .... then type >paman This should bring up the manager which will indicate if pulse is running. You can also search the running processes from terminal with >ps aux | grep pulseaudio If you find it is not running, from terminal type: pulseaudio --start then recheck that the process stays up. The service should not have problems though with an unstable pulse.
