Can you install paman from apt-get ? This will help debugging sound
issues with pulse.

Open terminal and type

>sudo apt-get install paman
....

then type

>paman

This should bring up the manager which will indicate if pulse is
running.

You can also search the running processes from terminal with

>ps aux | grep pulseaudio

If you find it is not running,

from terminal type:

pulseaudio --start

then recheck that the process stays up.

The service should not have problems though with an unstable pulse. It
has been tested thoroughly to handle this...
