Lucid aligns to 1MiB boundaries by default, which significantly improves
performance on modern hardware.  I'm not quite sure exactly how this
maps onto your setup but it seems likely to be the cause.

You can revert to the old alignment by adding the
'partman/alignment=cylinder' boot parameter to the installer.
