It was, there hasn't and it is. I've tried from time to time over
the last six months, always with the same result, and, as a relative
novice, haven't been inspired with any possible way round the problem.
I suspect this also accounts for the fact that some potential updates
have meanwhile been blocked. If, by the latest development, you mean
10.04, I could try, if it would help, but have been waiting for the end
product to be released, with the idea that I'd try to install again from
scratch.

Accessories aren't an option from my Applications, and Aptitude is
one of the things that disappeared from my menus when I tried to edit
them, but I tried Applications > Debian > Applications > Shells > Bash
and got the response 'Please install the package "python-launchpadlib"',
so did (and wish I could make sense of the fact that "New Packages" far
exceed "Installed Packages" plus "Not Installed Packages".

Having logged in and authorized apport-collect, I got the message "This
site is running pre-release code. Please report all bugs. Disable edge
direct." Unfortunately, I don't really understand how I should respond
to that, but returned to finish the authentication process. That
resulted in the message "Downloading bug...
Bug title: Could not calculate the upgrade
Collecting apport information for source package linux...
Uploading additional information to Launchpad bug...
    short text date..."

I've had a look at this, and am under the impression that it'll take
me some time to get to grips with it, so hope that what I've managed so
far will be some help meanwhile.
