(Bugs #479219, #488746, and #530366 appear to be regarding the same problem, but I'm posting to this report as it's the earliest and none of the other reports seem to have got anywhere.)
I saw this behaviour in Karmic, and I am still seeing it in Lucid, on two different machines. Both machines are running with the nvidia- current drivers. One is x86 and running at 1280x800, the other is amd64 and running at 1920x1200.
