Even the flickering message isn't really sufficient. You get: "General error mounting filesystems. A maintenance shell will now be started. CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and reboot the system. r...@hostname:~# ..."
... with none of the actual errors that caused the problem, so I have no idea what's failing.
