You need to turn off composition before running kde System Settings
Display and setting to dual monitor - anything but clone or off. In
Karmic - composition disabled itself when switching to dual monitor and
could not be re-enabled until you log out and in again. In Lucid, X
crashes. But if you disable composition for opengl before going to dual
monitor, it works. This time, when you exit dual monitor (return to
clone), then enable composition, it works

I have a similar system: a intel GM945 based desktop system but with a
DVI and a VGA port instead.
