Okay, this is embarassing. Apparently there were two non-kernel-related problems. First, the wireless interface was down. Once I brought that up, I was able to use the command-line utilities. And second, wicd kept thinking the wireless interface was ath0 instead of wlan0. Once I fixed these, the wireless started working.
