What I wonder is what changed too, because when desktop effects first appeared several versions ago, I was able to use VNC and everything worked perfectly. (I think it was about a year ago that it stopped working). So at some point the handling for this changed in a way that open source drivers adjusted to, but everyone else writing drivers probably wasn't even aware of.
