Installation of Ubuntu 10.04 forced me to take another look at this bug. The workaround in the first post originated from this link: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=102344. I reread this thread and found out there were some new posts advising to update the BIOS. I downloaded an update from the ASUS site (which adressed this problem) and made the upgrade. It seems to do the trick for me, the nvidia driver is now working 'out of the box'.
