Looks like the debian package (which is probably the same) has the same
unsolved problem. I'll try and get in touch with the Ubuntu people.

That's discouraging: I'm in the process of switching from PHP to python
(for scripting, not web applications) because I'm about to start a big
project that requires a lot of  interaction between python and MySQL.

Thanks a lot for your help, I'll let you know if I come up with a better
solution.
