I'm currently testing a pre-release built of VLC 1.1 from ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8, and it does the right thing: A subtitle font (as opposed to a mere font file) can be chosen, and the setting actually works. So I guess this bug can be marked fixed once VLC 1.1 hits the official Ubuntu repositories.
