I think that it is connected to https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa- bug/view.php?id=4774 which have addition info (I don't have "waiting for sound system" but sound drop is very noticable). If I remember correctly bug appered first in karmic, and exists in lucid and also upstream alsa1.021 and 1.0.22.1. I'll test latest kernel and/or latest alsa snapshot when I have a bit of time.
