Thanks for your prompt response Steve.

With "splash" removed the only difference is the lack of a splash screen
and it is replaced with the bootup sequence, the laptop still locks up
just after where you would expect the splash screen to be.

With "splash" + "i915.modeset=1" in place it boots perfectly and
possibly slightly quicker than the 2.6.32-20 kernel.

My only question now is will I have to manually modify grub.cfg each
time a kernel or Grub is replaced?
