I have tried a persistent live USB key made from the lucid-desktop- amd64.iso of 20100416 (note: not i386), md5sum 3457aff4863972bbb38806e68cd30a77, which I think will be the beta3 release.
Results for "Try kubuntu without installing": * with no options changed - screen goes black - KDE start-up sound plays - Ctrl-Alt-Fn produces no visible results. - blind-typing Ctrl-Alt-Del Down-arrow CR CR etc shuts down the computer * with "splash" removed from the boot options - as above * with "splash" present in the boot options and "nomodeset" selected in the F6 menu - big ugly boot animation.
