Hi I upgraded virtualbox to its latest version 3.1.6 and addition of guest additions works perfectly.
The version of virtualbox on which it was crashing was 3.1.4. I was running ubuntu 9, win7, opensolaris all on 3.1.4 and they were finding fine.
