I have the same behavior even after removing privoxy. To me it seems like this could be a leftover after changing the proxy settings via "System" -> "Settings". I configured back to "no proxies", but I still get the behavior.
I also get this behavior with lynx and wget. I don't have any problem with graphical browsers like Firefox, they work fine. I am not sure which package exactly causes the problem.
