Had the same issue yesterday. A Ubuntu 9.10 64 Bit install performed
"into" an existing Windows 7 installation via Wubi. The user was created
but the password that was issued at the wubi install setup would not
work.

I also tried logging in in console mode with this username/password
combination but to no avail.

This is really a pity. Previously we were very impressed by the ease and
seamless integration of this installation type, but this was spoiled by
this issue. We finally resolved it by booting into recovery mode and
resetting the password there via root console.

The password contained only lowercase letters so the issue cannot be
because of some special character.

Do you need any other information that may help solving this?
