Hi Michael, three things: * Yes, at least provide glxinfo and Xorg.0.log from when compiz is enabled, as that'll indicate if software rendering is enabled (and perhaps why) * Try booting with KMS disabled (radeon.modeset=0) to see if this is the (known) performance impact of KMS. (However typically the performance is not so bad that the system becomes unusable). * Have you had -fglrx installed previously? If so, it may have left some of its gl libs in the way. Make sure to completely purge it - see the guide about this at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/
** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Incomplete ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-radeon Using a default installation of Lucid Beta 2 (installed onto a USB stick), the system is borderline unusable because of extremely slow visual response. This was the case with a daily build that I tested several days ago, as well as both a default and an up-to-date installation of Beta 2. These issues only happen with Compiz enabled. Clicking on 'Applications' quickly pops up the menu (though not with the smooth fade I've come to expect from Compiz). When I move my mouse from 'Applications' to 'Places,' though, it takes nearly 3 seconds to hide the 'Applications' menu and draw the 'Places' menu. Similarly, attempting to resize or move a window does nothing for the first couple seconds, and when the window does finally move, the redrawing is choppier than an uncomposited Metacity. This is a major regression compared to the Karmic and Jaunty, which both ran Compiz flawlessly out of the box with the default Radeon driver. Disabling Compiz makes the system usable. Ubuntu 10.04 Beta 2 AMD64 Diamond Radeon x1300 If there's more I can do to help, I'd be glad to. I've spent the last several minutes trying to record a video of the problem, but recordMyDesktop keeps crashing. If I can get it to work, I'll post the video here. - --- + --- Architecture: amd64 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 DkmsStatus: Error: [Errno 2] No such file or directory GdmLog1: Error: command ['gksu', '-D', 'Apport', '--', 'cat', '/var/log/gdm/:0.log.1'] failed with exit code 1: cat: /var/log/gdm/:0.log.1: No such file or directory GdmLog2: Error: command ['gksu', '-D', 'Apport', '--', 'cat', '/var/log/gdm/:0.log.2'] failed with exit code 1: cat: /var/log/gdm/:0.log.2: No such file or directory LiveMediaBuild: Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx" - Beta amd64 (20100406.1) Package: xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.12.192-2ubuntu2 PackageArchitecture: amd64 ProcCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/casper/vmlinuz noprompt cdrom-detect/try-usb=true persistent file=/cdrom/preseed/hostname.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd.lz quiet splash -- maybe-ubiquity ProcEnviron: - LANG=en_US.UTF-8 - SHELL=/bin/bash + LANG=en_US.UTF-8 + SHELL=/bin/bash ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-19.28-generic 2.6.32.10+drm33.1 Tags: lucid lucid Uname: Linux 2.6.32-19-generic x86_64 UserGroups: adm admin cdrom dialout lpadmin plugdev sambashare dmi.bios.date: 03/14/2006 dmi.bios.vendor: Phoenix Technologies, LTD dmi.bios.version: 6.00 PG dmi.board.name: K8T890-8237 dmi.chassis.type: 3 dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnPhoenixTechnologies,LTD:bvr6.00PG:bd03/14/2006:svn:pn:pvr:rvn:rnK8T890-8237:rvr:cvn:ct3:cvr: glxinfo: Error: [Errno 2] No such file or directory system: - distro: Ubuntu - codename: lucid - architecture: x86_64 - kernel: 2.6.32-19-generic + distro: Ubuntu + codename: lucid + architecture: x86_64 + kernel: 2.6.32-19-generic + + [lspci] + 00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: VIA Technologies, Inc.
