Update: booting (from a thumb-drive) fails just before the menu is displayed for language choice, etc, but I can open a console window using Ctrl-Alt-F1. The following messages then scroll on my screen (use Ctrl-w to stop scrolling, Ctrl-c to get a command prompt):
