When I first started GNOME on xgl I was offered an option as to whether
I wanted to use the GNOME keyboard settings or the X keyboard settings.
I went with the X settings and wound up with US keybindings. Given that
this choice is not offered on a normal xorg I think I'm going to go
ahead and confirm this bug.

The shift-backspace problem is no longer present.
