Hi Sb, The wins NSS driver is not one that we want to enable by default, and definitely not in the manner described at the link you gave - yes, there are security issues with giving wins precedence over DNS, and even when not giving it precedence, the semantics of NetBIOS are suboptimal for integration with the host database. So I'm afraid this bug should be closed.
However, I notice that you say you're having problems with connecting to Windows shares with Nautilus and Dolphin. That's an entirely separate issue. Nautilus and Dolphin connecting to Windows shares do *not* depend on nss_wins; in fact, the same underlying code that's used *in* nss_wins is the same code that supposed to be used in by Nautilus and Dolphin, so if browsing / connecting to Windows servers by NetBIOS name doesn't work, you have a bug in your network setup or in your smb.conf, or you have found a bug in nautilus/dolphin. As this functionality is working just fine for the vast majority of users, it's likely to be a local bug in your network setup or your smb.conf. I would recommend you present the details of your problem on ubuntuforums.org for help in resolving this. ** Changed in: base-files (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Won't Fix -- NetBIOS name resolution broken, but extremely easy to fix https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/555916 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
