Same problem here, using Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop, Intel 945GM video card, 17'' LCD screen, 1440x900 native resolution.
According to http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=415061, "getting the current Debian package source from experimental and changing the value of I9XX_P2_LVDS_SLOW_LIMIT to 90000 helped.
