Are you sure it is just lack of resolv.conf?

I just did a fresh install of lucid and when I boot the network
interface isn't brought up at all.

Running "sudo dhclient" manually gets it up and running. I also do not
see the network manager applet, and looking in the Network Manager
configuration I do not see any "Auto eth0" entry I used to see on my
other laptop.
