Well, technically, if the GTK+ depending stuff are media device plugins, one could try moving those to seperate packges. Of course this needs to be coordinated with Debian and is no easy thing to do. This would also allow people to install only media-device plugins they need. And in consequence, with a proper framework in place, we could boot the media device plugins off the CD and install them on-demand.
