It is a software like a lot of other one. It is a software which runs a
lot in the background to retrieve mails. In my opinion the function to
retrieve mails or RSS-Feeds, etc. every N minutes speaks for itself.

There are a lot of other programs which run a lot in the background and
therefore have a tray icon. For example Audio-Player like Audacious and
Rhythmbox, Bittorrent-Clients like Transmission, Chat-Programs like
Empathy and TV-Programs (to record TV) like Me-TV. Of course it is
possible to minimize them. But have a look on my panel what happens when
all these programs are just minimized (I'll attach a screenshot).

Why shouldn't Evolution have this functionality?
