OK, this is beyond silly. In debugging this I tried to make the PC beep, just for reference. It would not. I tried crsr-left in bash (usually it beeps), echo -e \\a , tput bel None worked, not in xterm, not on VT1. All of them make the screen flash when run under screen (it has a "visual bell" feature.
I tried on my laptop (HP nw8440) and under vmware on win2003 on my PC. Any idea why beep does not work ? This was with Herd 5 Live CD environment.
