As you suspected it's the vmware script. Here is what I did to get past it as I don't know how to play with its script. I was trying to use the auto install facility in vmware 3. I stopped it before running the skeleton of the vm and things worked fine. Guess it's a very dumb solution to the problem but I am happy as it works.
