A bit more info: - After a blank screen from an unknown cause (sleep/wakeup failed?), I had to do a hard reboot, and ended up with the same grub "error: invalid environment block" others were describing. After searching for 3-4 hours I stumbled upon this bug, and the following steps solved it: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/439784/comments/11 - I added a new duplicate
