Jerry, the i915 in the i915.modeset=0 kernel parameter is the name of the kernel driver, not the chipset. I don't know the historical reasons for it being named i915 (possibly it was only used for i915 and newer in the beginning), but at least nowadays it is used on all chipsets, including i830, 845G, and 855GM.
