I have the same problem using Lucid Beta1 - except that it's
intermittent. It's been happening since Beta1 and with updates done
daily. I do the normal boot, usually works fine. Every now and then it
freezes. I removed 'quiet spash' and it ends as described above at
"Checking battery status...".

I have 10.04 running off an external USB One-touch 100GB Maxtor. I
haven't tried it on my internal hard drive.

Computer Dell Inspiron 6400, T2400 1.8Ghz, ATI X1300 mobility radeon,
1GB ram.
