Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ubiquity
Experimenting with a number of Ubuntu builds on machines with Windows 7 installed, 500Gb SATA drives sda and sdb, 4Gb flash drive sdc, selecting "Install Grub to /dev/sdc" via advanced at end of install. Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 worked as expected: booting from USB drive brings up grub, booting without USB boots Windows boot loader from /dev/sda. Installing 10.4b1 32-bit "live", updating packages and then performing System > Administration > Install RELEASE did not perform as expected; partial installation of Grub to /dev/sda that invokes "grub recovery", and a non-functional MBR on USB drive.
