IMHO a workaround not a fix ;)
Nevertheless: I had a quick look:
Edgy and Feisty: bug is fixed. I've no knoda installed and
kontact does not show the 'News' item anymore.
Dapper had the bug, and there are two workarounds:
a) install knoda if you want to use Newgroups
b) Settings-> configure kontact , click 'select components...' and deselect
the news item.
