Thanks, I already found out this was the case. I was a bit confused because the default did not work right away. On a clean system
apt-get install --no-install-recommends linux-headers-`uname -r` open- vm-dkms open-vm-tools does the trick and everything seems to work just fine - the linux- headers were needed because of #509865.
